Nicolas rallies to victory in Peru's Clasico Derby Nacional
Nicolas, winner of the Clasico Gustavo Prado Heudebert (Per-G2), flew late to score a head victory in the Clasico Derby Nacional (Per-G1), the third leg of the Peruvian Quadruple Crown, on December 19 at Hipodromo Monterrico in Lima.

Piloted to victory by Juan Torres, the three-year-old son of the Mr. Prospector stallion Abel Prospect rallied strongly down the stretch to get up in the final jump over a hard-trying Sumud, with pacesetter Baleriana, a filly, finishing a very game third, beaten less than two lengths.
Trained by Jorge Toutin, Nicolas covered the 2,400 meters (11.93 furlongs) in 2:38.80 to register his first Group 1 victory and fourth win in 23 starts for owner Stud Thani.

Nicolas won the Gustavo Prado Heudebert on the turf on November 6 and entered the Derby Nacional off a fourth-place finish in the 2,000-meter (9.94-furlong) Clasico Ricardo Ortiz de Zevallos (Per-G1) on November 21.
Nicolas is expected to start next on February 13 in the Gran Premio Nacional Augusto B. Leguia (Per-G1), the fourth and final leg of the series, which has been chosen by the Peruvian Jockey Club Racing Commission to serve as one of two qualifying races for the 2005 running of the Gran Premio Asociacion Latinoamericana de Jockey Clubes (Arg-G1) to be held at Hipodromo San Isidro in Buenos Aires on March 12.

Bred by Eduardo Villaran's Haras San Pablo, Nicolas is one of four foals out of the Group 1-placed Book The Band mare Boating, whose dam, Gruba, is a half sister to 1981 Derby Nacional winner Don Ramon. Michael Burns
